One of the famous characteristics of Marseille soap is that it can be used both as a toilet soap and as a detergent for washing clothes or dishes.
In Europe, it is also a favorite among campers and hikers, as they only need one bar of soap to shower, do laundry, and clean pots and pans. Add to that its long lifespan, which is far superior to all other soaps, and its biodegradable nature; that’s very practical! Thanks to its healing properties, it can also help with small wounds or even insect bites.
The little story
For over 3,000 years, Aleppo soap (Syria) has been crafted from generation to generation by master soap makers after the olive harvest in November. Made from olive oil and bay berry oil (pulp of the Laurus Nobilis fruit), it is the ancestor of Marseille soaps. It was the international star of its time. Until the 16th century, Marseille soap factories merely imitated what was being made elsewhere. However, raw material sourcing techniques improved while the supremacy of Genoa, which until then had produced the most renowned soaps, crumbled under the weight of embezzlement. Soap made in Marseille thus gained in quality, popularity, and internationalization.
The authentic
There are products on the market that are called Marseille soap, but in reality, they have nothing in common with real Marseille soap. So, how can you be sure you’re buying an authentic product?
Originally composed of 72% olive oil and without added fragrance, this authentic bar is used for body care, particularly for sensitive skin. There is also a “household” version of Marseille soap, with percentages and oils that differ from the original version. Authentic Marseille soap must comply with the approved manufacturing process, which limits the addition of synthetic additives.
There are several large Marseille soap factories that produce authentic Marseille soap in the purest tradition. They have joined forces to form the Union of Marseille Soap Professionals (UPSM).
